Spring and summer are the perfect time to enjoy all of the cold desserts that you possibly can. I'm talking about ice cream, popsicles, no-bake cheesecake, and of course a good trifle.

Trifles are a classic dessert that's usually made up of three layers of cake, fruit, and cream. It's one of those desserts that looks fancy and elegant, but it actually comes together in minutes with minimal ingredients that can be easily located in any grocery store.

It can also be made using anything that you prefer, but today we're keeping it simple with a cream cheese based cream, buttery pound cake, and of course canned peaches.

Let's get started!

What's a Trifle?

A trifle also known as a punch bowl cake is a cold dessert made up of delicious layers of cake, fruit, and cream (also custard or jelly). It originated in England during the 18th century but has been made popular here in the States.

It's perfect to serve a crowd and in the American South can be found at after-church and family gatherings in many different cake and fruit variations.

Why Use Canned Peaches?

The great thing about canned peaches is that they're available all year long. They're harvested, packed, and shipped at their peak ripeness for a unique naturally sweet flavor. Perfect to use anytime, even after peach season ends.

They can easily be located at your local grocery store on the shelves. For this trifle recipe, be sure to grab three cans of sliced peaches to use to create the fruit layer of the trifle.

If you prefer to use fresh peaches, then you could slice the fresh fruit and use it instead. Frozen sliced peaches would also work, as long as they are allowed time to completely thaw out and drain off any liquid.

Ingredients Needed to Make Peach Trifle

  1. Canned Peaches - Be sure to use sliced canned peaches. For this recipe you will need three cans, try to select peaches that do not contain added sugar unless you prefer some additional sweetness.
  2. Butter Pound Cake - Keep things simple by using a premade pound cake found at your local grocery store in the frozen food section. If you prefer to make your own then you can do that as well. The bakery made cut up angel food cake or sponge cake is a great substitute.
  3. Cream Cheese - Use regular full-fat cream cheese to make the cream mixture creamy and thick. If you prefer to use low-fat, then you may do that as well. This recipe has not been made with a dairy-free alternative.
  4. Heavy Whipping Cream - Gives structure and body to the sweet cream layer. Usually whipped until stiff peaks form, but when combined with cream cheese this is not necessary.
  5. Granulated Sugar - Regular cane sugar or granulated sugar (caster sugar) for this recipe to add a bit of sweetness to this peach trifle.
  6. Vanilla Extract - Use pure vanilla extract for added flavor.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient quantities and instructions.
