This recipe makes the best strawberry smoothie and only requires 3 simple ingredients.

Let's get started!

Why You'll Love This Simple Strawberry Smoothie Recipe?

  • Quick and Convenient. Using frozen strawberries eliminates the need for ice and ensures a quick and creamy texture.
  • Simple. This smoothie requires minimal ingredients and prep work, making it a great fuss-free option for busy mornings or post-workout refueling.
  • Taste. The natural sweetness from the strawberries combined with your favorite protein creates a deliciously sweet flavor that isn't overpowering. You can adjust the sweetness by adding a sweetener such as honey or maple syrup.
  • Customization. This is a basic smoothie recipe that you can experiment with to create your unique smoothie recipe using this as a base.

Ingredients You'll Need

Overhead view of three ingredients needed to make smoothie in separate containers.

This is a simple recipe that requires just three ingredients - no need to make things complicated!

  1. Frozen Strawberries - Grab a bag of whole or sliced frozen strawberries from the freezer section at your local grocery store. They're fresh strawberries that are picked at peak ripeness and quickly frozen to lock in the nutrients. Plus they'll replace our ice cubes for the recipe.
  2. Protein Powder - Use your favorite protein powder, but I prefer using vanilla flavored or strawberry flavored powder. Plant-based protein powder can be used to make two nondairy smoothies.
  3. Water - Keep your smoothie simple and use water to smooth it out and blend everything. Milk, almond milk, any plant-based milk (non-dairy milk), or fruit juice could all be used as substitutions.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient quantities and instructions.

Recipe Variations

  • Use your favorite milk option instead of water. Want a thick thick smoothie? Use coconut milk!
  • Instead of water, use orange juice for a sweet and tangy smoothie.
  • Use less liquid and make the smoothie ultra-thick to make a colorful smoothie bowl. Top it with fresh fruit, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and a drizzle of peanut butter or almond butter.
  • Omit the water and protein and add in a protein shake instead.
  • Add in half frozen strawberries and half frozen banana for a classic strawberry banana smoothie recipe.
  • For some additional protein, add in a serving or two of greek yogurt, kefir, or even strawberry yogurt.

How To Make the Perfect Strawberry Smoothie

Step 1 - The strawberry smoothie begins by adding water into a high-speed blender/high-powered blender. Again, if you prefer you can use milk, coconut water, or almond milk. I like to keep it simple and lower in calories, so I use filtered water. Next, add the berries and protein.

Step 2 - Place the lid on the blender and blend/puree until creamy and smooth.

Tips For Blending the Best Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

Be sure to add the liquid first in the blender followed by the other two ingredients. I like to add in the following order, the water, protein powder, and the strawberries on top. You may want to add a little at a time and blend until it reaches the desired consistency.

This strawberry smoothie is very thick, almost the consistency of soft ice cream, and is perfect to use in a smoothie bowl. I will warn you that it takes some time for the strawberry smoothie to become smooth, be patient. You may also need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides during the process. This is why a high-powered blender such as a Ninja, Blendtec, or Vitamix comes in handy.

What Protein Powder To Use In Your Strawberry Smoothie

Use your favorite protein, but plain, vanilla, and strawberry flavors work best. My favorite protein and the one that I like to use is the Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein.

For this smoothie, I use 1 to 2 scoops to make two smoothies. You want to use the serving size according to whatever protein you use. I also like Sunwarrior Protein.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • If you're not using a high-power blender, then be sure to add water, protein powder, and frozen strawberries on top to the blender.
  • For a thicker smoothie, simply use less liquid, and for a thinner smoothie use a little more.
  • Be sure to taste the smoothie and make any necessary ingredient adjustments before pouring it into a glass to serve.
  • This smoothie recipe makes two smoothies or one large smoothie.

I made these for our Saturday morning breakfast treat, and my family loved them. We did opt for chocolate protein powder, but still a winning recipe the kids want to make again!
