Deviled eggs are a great appetizer that is simple to make and great to have ready to satisfy family and friends while they wait for dinner to be ready.

It's a tasty recipe that only requires a few ingredients, but depending on who makes them, they can vary.

In my family, they're always made with Miracle Whip. Now I realize that not everyone is a Miracle Whip fan, but it really does give the recipe a little something extra.

Let's get started!

What is Miracle Whip?

Miracle Whip is a popular store-bought sandwich spread condiment that has a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy flavor. It is very similar to real mayonnaise in texture but has a uniquely zesty and sweet flavor.

How to Hard Boil Eggs

Large glass bowl with six hard boiled eggs, peeled with shells still in the bowl.

Making hard boiled eggs is a fairly simple process, but there are a few ways to make the process easy. Here is the process that I use to get a perfect hard-boiled egg each and every time.

  • Use a large enough pot or saucepan and make sure that you completely cover the eggs with cold water. Add enough cold water to the pot to cover each egg.
  • Crank the stovetop heat up to high heat and allow the water to come to a rolling boil. Set at this point and allow the eggs to continue boiling in the water for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Carefully turn off the heat and carefully remove the pot/pan from the stovetop.
  • Add the boiled eggs to a large bowl with cold water and plenty of ice.
  • Once the eggs have completely cooled in the ice water/ice bath, carefully peel each egg and cut it in half lengthwise.

Keep in mind there are many other ways to boil eggs, but this is the way that works best for me.

Ingredients You'll Need

Ingredients needed to make deviled eggs in separate bowls and containers.
  1. Hard Boiled Eggs - The star ingredient of the recipe, large eggs or jumbo eggs work the best. It's best to boil and peel fresh eggs yourself instead of using the eggs that are packaged and already hard boiled from the grocery store.
  2. Miracle Whip - The secret ingredient that really makes a difference in taste! Make sure that you select the original creamy miracle whip and not any other flavor or olive oil. I suggest not substituting this ingredient with mayonnaise, but if you must then it's perfectly acceptable.
  3. Sweet Pickle Relish - Adds great texture to the egg filling with a slightly sweet pickle flavor. Make sure that it is sweet relish and not dill relish.
  4. Mustard - Prepared yellow mustard adds a nice tangy flavor to the egg mixture and gives it a yellow color. Dijon mustard could be used instead in the same unit of measure.
  5. Salt - Brings out the flavors of the other ingredients and prevents the eggs from tasting flat.
  6. Ground Black Pepper - Provides the eggs with a slight amount of peppery spice flavor, try using freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Paprika - Sprinkled over the top of the finished eggs before serving to add a layer of smoky flavor.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient quantities and instructions.

How to Make the Best Deviled Eggs Recipe

Begin the egg recipe by cutting the hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. After cutting each individual egg in half, place them on a plate or platter.

Hard boiled eggs cut in half on white plate.

Use a small spoon to carefully scoop out the egg yolks and place them in a mixing bowl. Be sure to do this gently so as to not tear the egg half.

Leave the egg whites intact and clean up any egg yolk left on the egg whites.

To the same bowl with the egg yolks, add the Miracle Whip, mustard, sweet pickle relish, salt and ground black pepper. Stir well to combine and use a fork to mash the yolks to break them down so they will mix easily.

Ingredients to make devil egg filling added to glass bowl.

The filling ingredients could also be added to a food processor or mixed with a hand mixer to make this process easier. The egg yolk mixture will still be slightly chunky and that perfectly is fine.

Using a small plastic bag or piping bag (pastry bag), add the filling mixture and evenly pipe it into each of the egg white halves.

Top each finished egg with a sprinkle of paprika and serve warm or place in the refrigerator and allow them to chill before serving. Enjoy!

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • Start with freshly boiled eggs as they work the best and are so much easier to peel and work with.
  • Handle the boiled eggs with care when peeling and cutting them in half. The egg-white halves make the presentation and are the vessels to hold the filling. I like to play it safe and boil an extra egg or two just in case I mess one up.
  • If you do not have a piping bag or pastry bag, use a small plastic storage bag (like a zipper sandwich bag). Add the filling, push out the air before closing, clip off the bottom corner of the bag and push the filling out and into the egg halves.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for an hour before serving. It allows the eggs to be fully set and become firm.

Storage Tips

Deviled eggs are best enjoyed the same day they are made. If you happen to have any leftover deviled eggs, then be sure to store them in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days.

During storage, you may notice the egg whites will begin to lose their texture, this is normal and why I strongly recommend consuming deviled eggs the same day they are made. Also do not allow the deviled eggs to sit out too long at room temperature, especially in warm weather.

I also do not recommend freezing them as they will not hold up.
