The whole family is sure to love this savory and comforting recipe, try pairing it with a side of Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes and Garlic Green Beans.
There is nothing like a comforting and filling dinner!
Growing up one of my favorite dinners was hamburger patties or steaks with brown gravy. This was usually paired with green peas or green beans and mashed potatoes or stovetop mac and cheese.
It's so mouthwatering and a great way to satisfy picky eaters
Let's get started!
Ingredients You'll Need
- Ground Beef - I love using lean ground beef, but feel free to use any ground beef that you prefer.
- Egg - You'll need one egg to help bind the meat mixture together.
- Salt & Ground Black Pepper - Helps to season the beef and bring out the ingredient flavor and basically prevents the overall dish from tasting flat.
- Garlic Cloves - Two freshly minced garlic cloves add a pungent sharp garlic flavor. You could use garlic powder instead.
- Worcestershire Sauce - Adds a savory umami flavor to the meat patties. Do not substitute or omit this ingredient, it makes a big difference in taste.
- All-Purpose Flour - Helps to make the gravy base and help it thicken.
- Beef Broth - Adds beefy flavor to the gravy and thins out the flour mixture to create the perfect gravy mixture.
- Beef Bouillon - Makes the gravy super flavorful and tasty. Kitchen Bouquet (Browning Sauce) could be used instead or in addition to the other ingredients. This liquid not only seasons the gravy, but also gives the gravy that rich dark color.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient quantities and instructions.
Recipe Variations
- Ground Turkey - Substitute the ground beef for ground turkey instead.
- Onion Gravy - Make onion gravy by adding in some sliced sweet onions before adding the beef patties. Add the sliced onions and butter to the large nonstick skillet and allow them to cook until soft and translucent. If you just want more onion flavor, try adding onion powder or onion soup mix to the meat mixture before forming the patties.
- Mushroom Gravy - Saute some thinly sliced mushrooms in butter before adding in the beef for some delicious mushroom gravy.
- Cheese - Add some shredded cheese to the meat mixture before forming the patties for a cheesy hamburger steak.
How to Make Hamburger Steaks
In a large bowl, add the ground beef, lightly beaten egg, salt, ground black pepper, minced garlic cloves, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix the meat mixture using a large spoon or clean/gloved hands, until combined.
Divide the ground beef mixture and form 4 to 5 oval-shaped patties that are about ½-inch thick and 3 to 4 inches wide. Set them aside.
Heat a large non stick skillet or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, you can add some olive oil but it isn't necessary. After 1 to 2 minutes, add the burger patties careful not to overcrowd the pan.
Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, flip each pattie to the opposite side, and continue cooking for another 4 to 5 minutes. The patties should have browned and the internal temperature has reached 160 degrees F. Carefully remove each hamburger from the skillet onto a plate and cover loosely (tent) with aluminum foil. Repeat the process until all of the patties are done.
Reduce the heat to medium heat. Using the same skillet with the meat drippings, add the all-purpose flour and stir it continuously for 4 to 5 minutes, until it's dark brown and forms a paste consistency. Slowly add in the beef broth and beef bouillon cube. Stir to combine and allow the gravy mixture to come to a low boil and simmer for about 3 minutes.
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon the brown gravy over the hamburger steaks. Cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove the hamburger steaks and gravy from the skillet. Serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Enjoy!
Tips to Make the Best Hamburger Steak Recipe
- Try not to overcook the meat, once it browns and reaches your desired internal temperature using a meat thermometer you can stop cooking and add to the gravy.
- Tightly form and flatten the patties, doing this will help them to stay together throughout the cooking process.
- Making the gravy sauce is easy, but make sure that you stir or whisk it often. If you prefer to use a packet of brown gravy mix instead, they you can do that and follow the package instructions.
- Adding some browning sauce or Kitchen Bouquet will deepen the color of the gravy, if you prefer a darker gravy.
Storage Tips
Storage. If you have any leftover ground beef patties, allow them time to cool to room temperature before storing them for later. Place the leftovers in an airtight container or storage bag and store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating. When you're ready to serve the hamburger patties and gravy again, reheat them on the stovetop in a skillet over medium-low heat until warm. You can also reheat them in the microwave for a quicker option. They can also be placed in a baking dish and reheated in the oven at 300 degrees F. until warmed thoroughly.
Freezing. This recipe may be stored in the freezer for up to 1 month. Place the cooked and cooled steaks into a freezer-safe container and place them in the freezer. When ready to serve them again, allow the patties time to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat on the stovetop in a skillet over medium low heat until warm.
