It's finally here, the first day of Fall!
If you don't know already, this is my favorite season and what better way to celebrate than with a sweet and refreshing cocktail?
And not just any cocktail, but a margarita. If you've been following me for a while, then you already know that I have a serious love for margaritas. It can be made in so many different flavor combinations and my favorites have been a Blackberry Thyme Margarita as well as a spicy Jalapeno Margarita.
Last year I even shared a new margarita every Monday for #MargaritaMondays on Instagram.
But today I'll be sharing a simple margarita recipe with the flavors of apple and ginger. Let's get started!

Ingredients You'll Need
- Tequila - This truly comes down to preference, for this recipe I chose to use reposado tequila. This tequila is aged in oak for two months up to a year and softens the taste a bit making it perfect for use in any margarita recipe. Other tequilas that are available are joven, anejo and blanco.
- Apple Cider - Provides that fall-inspired flavor and sweetness. Should be easy to locate at your local grocery store during the fall season.
- Ginger Kombucha - Gives this cocktail that ginger twist and a punch of flavor that pair nicely with the other ingredients. Be sure to select a kombucha that only contains ginger and not any different flavors.
- Maple Syrup - This twist really takes the flavor of the margarita up a notch! It provides so much depth and I prefer to use it instead of simple syrup. If you prefer simple syrup, mix one part cane sugar with one part warm water until the sugar dissolves.
- Lemon Juice - Use fresh lemon or juice that is 100% lemon juice without any other additional ingredients.
- Brown Sugar - Pairs well with the other ingredients and is used to rim that glass. You may skip this step/ingredient if you prefer.
- Ice - Crushed or cubed, depending on your preference.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient quantities.
Step By Step Instructions
Begin the margarita recipe by using a cocktail shaker or jar with a lid to combine together the tequila, apple cider, ginger kombucha, maple syrup, and lemon juice together.
Place the top/lid on the shaker or jar and carefully shake for 10 to 15 seconds.
Grab your favorite serving glass and rub the rim with a slice of lemon for the juice. Rub this part of the glass in some brown sugar until the rim of the glass is completely covered. Add ice to the glass.
Hint: For a sugar-rimmed glass, take a lemon wedge and run it along the rim/top of each glass before dipping and turning it in some brown sugar to coat the top of the entire glass. I like to pour some brown sugar on a small plate to make the process easier.
Pour the margarita mixture from the shaker or jar into the glass. Top with a thin apple slice for garnish and serve with ice. Enjoy!
What Tequila To Use?
With so many different tequila options and brands, it can be an overwhelming choice. There are five different kinds of tequila and I will try to break them down for you to make selecting a little easier.
- Respasado – Rested or aged tequila, my personal favorite to use for cocktails.
- Blanco – Also known as clear, white or silver tequila. Bottled right after being distilled. This is most commonly used in margaritas.
- Joven – This tequila is also known as gold and has a beautiful golden color, very similar to Blanco but may contain a few additives to give it some color.
- Anejo – Extra aged or vintage. This tequila is aged in oak barrels for at least one year.
- Extra Anejo – A new class of tequila, also known as ultra-aged because it is aged in oak barrels for at least three years.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Use any brand of ginger kombucha that you prefer.
- Be sure to use fresh lemon juice!
- If this margarita is too strong in terms of alcohol, adjust to your preference or allow the ice to melt a little before drinking to dilute. You may also add additional kombucha or lemon juice to the drink if it's still too strong.
- Double or triple the margarita recipe as needed.
