This Apple Dump Cake is made in the Instant Pot using three simple ingredients. It is sweet, moist, and loaded with flavor. The perfect apple dessert to make and share with your family and friends.
It is finally Fall!
This is my absolute favorite time of the year. The temperatures begin to cool off a bit. The leaves begin to change colors and the mums become in season. It is also the time for festivals, football, and anything pumpkin. Everywhere you look tells you that pumpkin, and pumpkin spice, is the flavor of the season, but there are others. One of my favorites is apple.
Apples can be used in recipes that are sweet, tart, or even savory. It can be used in so many different ways. I’ve shared a few recipes here on the blog in a batch of Apple Crumble Bars. As well as Homemade Fried Apples and a delicious Apple Dutch Baby just to name a few.
My favorite way to use them is in a dessert recipe and since I’m all about the Instant Pot nowadays, today I’m going to share with you a recipe for apple dump cake that is made in minutes with the help of the instant pot.
What ingredients are needed for Instant Pot Apple Dump Cake?
For this instant pot apple dump cake you only need three simple ingredients.
- Apple pie filling
- Yellow cake mix
- Butter
How to Make a Dump Cake:
Begin this recipe by grabbing your instant pot/pressure cooker and place the trivet into the bottom. Add in one cup of water.
Next use a dish or pan that will fit inside the instant pot. This pan can be metal or glass. I’m using a 7-cup pyrex dish but there is a cake pan for the instant pot available on Amazon as well.
Pour the can of apple pie filling into the bottom of the dish and spread evenly.
Top with the yellow cake mix and gently press it down evenly into the dish. Do not use the entire bag of yellow cake mix.
Top with melted butter and spread evenly on top of the cake mix.
Place into the instant pot and cover with the lid. Make sure it is set to sealing and not venting. Set on manual for 25 minutes. Use quick release and serve while it is still warm.
Tips to make the best apple dump cake recipe:
- Do not mix the butter into the cake mix, just lightly spread it on top as evenly as you can. It does not have to be perfect.
- You may substitute the yellow cake mix for another mix. Try butter golden or spice cake!
- Use the trivet in the bottom of the instant pot to lift the dish out of the water.
- Once the cooking time is up, use quick release and remove from the instant pot so water does not drip from the instant pot top into the apple dump cake.
- Do not use the entire bag of cake mix.

December 6, 2019 at 8:56 PMI followed the recipe to a tee, and the cake wasn’t cooked at all. It was still just raw cake mix when it was done. I used the exact same glass bowl as listed in the recipe. Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?

December 8, 2019 at 7:36 PMI’m sorry this recipe didn’t work out for you. Before I post recipes on the blog they are tested by myself multiple times and/or by others. Usually, the cake forms a crust on top but is done underneath. The cake mix has to be spread evenly and pressed down with the melted butter floating on top. I’m not sure what happened.

March 30, 2020 at 8:32 AMHi Christina, I’m not sure what happened. Please make sure you are only using 1 1/2 cups of yellow cake mix for this recipe.
