The first time I tried an eggnog latte, I was on my way to work and stopped at Starbucks. The holiday drinks had arrived, and this was the one I wanted to try. I enjoyed it enough to start thinking about making my own at home.
My version uses your favorite eggnog and a simple coffee base instead of a complicated syrup. I've also made it with lactose-free and dairy-free eggnog, so you have options for the creamy part of the drink.
Get your favorite mug ready for a little holiday comfort. Let's get started!
Why You'll Love This Eggnog Latte
- Easy preparation - Instant espresso keeps the coffee step simple.
- Cozy flavor - Eggnog and cinnamon bring creamy holiday spice.
- Seasonal treat - A warm mug makes a festive addition to a holiday breakfast.
- Flexible ingredients - Choose the milk and eggnog that fit your preferences.
INGREDIENTS YOU'LL NEED
Here's everything you'll need to make this recipe.

- Espresso: Instant espresso powder supplies a bold coffee base without special brewing equipment.
- Eggnog: Choose a store-bought eggnog whose flavor you already like. It brings sweetness, body, and spice to the mug.
- Milk: Milk lightens the thick eggnog mixture. Regular or dairy-free milk can be used.
- Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon adds a warm spice note.
- Sugar: Granulated or cane sugar supplies extra sweetness. Adjust to your taste or omit it if the eggnog is sweet enough.
- Whipped cream: This optional topping gives the finished drink a coffee-shop feel.

How to Make Eggnog Latte
Here's a quick overview of the process. Full step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below.

Step 1: Prepare the Coffee
Dissolve the espresso completely so the drink does not have gritty pockets. Stir along the bottom of the container where powder can settle.

Step 2: Warm the Creamy Mixture
Stir the eggnog mixture before heating so the spice and sweetener are distributed. Use a microwave-safe container with room above the liquid, and follow the card's stirring break for more even heating.
Step 3: Combine and Finish
Pour the coffee slowly into the warm eggnog mixture so it combines without splashing. Add the optional topping at the end so it stays on the surface.

LAKITA'S EXPERT TIPS
Here are my best tips for making this recipe turn out perfectly every time.
- Choose heat-safe mugs: Decorative glasses are not always intended for hot liquids.
- Keep the handle accessible: Position the measuring cup so you can lift it safely after heating.
- Allow for microwave differences: Wattage and starting temperature affect heating, so watch the mixture rather than leaving it unattended.
- Plan your setup: Put serving mugs and spoons out before you begin so the finished drink can be served promptly.
- Skip aggressive boiling: Gentle heating gives you better control over a rich dairy-style mixture.
- Use a spoon for spice settling: A quick stir while drinking redistributes cinnamon that collects at the bottom.
Variations & Substitutions
This recipe is flexible, here are some easy ways to make it your own.
- Lactose-free: Use lactose-free eggnog and milk, as offered in the original post.
- Dairy-free: Choose plant-based eggnog, milk, and topping; check labels for your needs.
- Vanilla suggestion: The original recipe offers vanilla extract or syrup for another flavor note.
- Different sweetener: Try your preferred sweetener cautiously because sweetness and texture can differ.

Make-Ahead & Storage
Make-Ahead
This drink is best made just before serving. For an easier start, set out the dry ingredients and serving equipment in advance, keeping milk and eggnog refrigerated until needed.
Storage & Reheating
Make only what you plan to drink for the best texture. Keep unused milk and eggnog in their original closed containers in the refrigerator and follow their labels for storage duration. Freezing the assembled latte is not recommended for the best texture. If a freshly made mug needs warming, microwave in short intervals in a microwave-safe cup, stirring and checking between intervals, add whipped cream afterward.

What to Serve with Eggnog Latte
Here are some of my favorite ways to serve this dish.
- Cranberry Orange Scones - Pair bright citrus with the creamy coffee.
- Cranberry Bliss Bars - Add a festive sweet treat.
- Pecan Sandies - Serve a crisp cookie alongside your mug.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, the card uses instant espresso dissolved in hot water. That keeps this version accessible without a machine.
Very strong brewed coffee is an option from the original post. Use it in place of the prepared espresso mixture rather than adding the card's water again.
Decaffeinated espresso or very strong decaf coffee is a possible variation. Choose a coffee whose flavor you enjoy because it still needs to stand up to the eggnog.
An iced version would be a separate variation rather than the hot drink shown here. Chill the coffee before combining with cold ingredients and expect ice to dilute the flavor.
Eggnog sweetness varies between brands. Taste your eggnog before deciding whether you want the additional sweetener listed in the card.
Mild coffee can disappear behind the rich eggnog flavor. Start with the concentrated coffee specified rather than a weak everyday brew.
The base recipe does not add alcohol. Check the eggnog label because some products are sold with alcohol already included.
Yes, it is an optional finish. The eggnog and milk still give the drink its creamy character.
The original recipe allows homemade eggnog. Use an eggnog recipe with its own complete preparation and storage instructions; this latte method is not a substitute for preparing it properly.
This recipe was inspired by LaKita's first coffee-shop eggnog latte. It is her homemade version rather than a claim to the shop's exact formula.

Notes
-
- Do not use regular brewed coffee to make this latte. You need espresso or extremely strong coffee to make any latte recipe. A double shot of espresso works perfectly.
-
- Use your favorite store-bought eggnog or homemade eggnog to make the recipe.
-
- Any milk that you prefer can be used such as whole milk, oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
-
- For additional flavor, feel free to add in a little vanilla extract or vanilla syrup.
