Some of my favorite breakfast memories include my grandmother and mom making fried apples in a cast-iron skillet. They would serve them with salmon patties or another salty fish, and that combination of buttery, sweet apples with something savory still tastes like home to me.
This recipe uses only a few simple ingredients, but cooking the apples in butter and warm spices turns them into something special.
Let's get started!
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Ready in 15 minutes: These apples cook quickly on the stovetop.
- Made with seven ingredients: Everything is simple and easy to find.
- Sweet but balanced: Tart Granny Smith apples prevent the buttery brown sugar sauce from becoming overly sweet.
- Versatile: Serve them for breakfast, as a dinner side dish, or as dessert.
- Perfect for fall: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and warm apples bring all the cozy autumn flavor.
- Made in one skillet: Preparation and cleanup are both simple.
Ingredients You'll Need
Here are a few helpful notes about the ingredients. See the recipe card below for exact quantities and complete instructions.

- Granny Smith apples: Their tart flavor balances the sugar, and their firm texture helps them hold their shape while cooking. Choose medium apples without soft spots or bruises.
- Butter: Use regular salted or unsalted butter rather than margarine or a butter spread containing vegetable oil. Real butter creates the rich flavor and glossy sauce.
- Fresh lemon juice: Adds brightness, balances the sweetness, and slows browning after the apples are sliced.
- Granulated sugar: Sweetens the tart apples without adding another strong flavor.
- Brown sugar: Melts with the butter to create a rich sauce with a light caramel flavor. Light or dark brown sugar will work.
- Ground cinnamon: Provides the familiar warmth associated with cooked apples.
- Ground nutmeg: Adds another layer of warm spice without overpowering the cinnamon.

How to Make Southern Fried Apples
Here's a short overview of the process. The recipe card below contains the exact quantities, heat level, timing, and detailed directions.
Step 1: Prepare the Apples
Peel, core, and cut the apples into slices of similar thickness. Even slices help everything cook at approximately the same rate.
Step 2: Cook the Apples in Butter
Allow the butter to melt and become foamy in a large skillet. Add the apple slices and lemon juice, then gently cook them until they begin to soften.

Step 3: Add the Sugar and Spices
Sprinkle the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg evenly over the apples. Gently toss until every slice is coated.

Step 4: Finish the Sauce
Continue cooking over lower heat until the sugars dissolve and the sauce becomes hot and glossy. Remove the skillet from the heat while the apples are tender but still hold their shape.

LaKita's Expert Tips
- Slice the apples evenly. Similar-size slices cook together and prevent a mixture of hard and mushy apples.
- Use a firm, tart apple. Granny Smith apples provide the best balance of flavor and texture.
- Watch the butter closely. Allow it to become golden and foamy, but do not let it burn.
- Use a large skillet. Giving the apples enough room helps them cook evenly instead of steaming in a crowded pan.
- Do not overcook the apples. They should be tender with a slight bite rather than soft enough to fall apart.
- Taste before adding more sugar. Apples vary in sweetness, so adjust according to the fruit and your preference.
- Toss gently. Stirring too aggressively can break the softened apple slices.
- Serve them warm. The buttery sauce is at its best while warm and glossy.
Variations and Substitutions
- Use a mixture of apples: Combine tart Granny Smith apples with a firm, sweeter apple such as Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. Reduce the sugar slightly if needed.
- Use dark brown sugar: This creates a deeper molasses and caramel flavor.
- Add vanilla: Stir in a small splash of vanilla extract after removing the skillet from the heat.
- Use apple pie spice: Substitute apple pie spice for the cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Add toasted pecans: Sprinkle chopped toasted pecans over the finished apples for crunch.
- Add more spice: A small pinch of ground cloves or allspice gives the apples a bolder fall flavor.

Make-Ahead and Storage
Make-Ahead
Southern fried apples can be completely prepared one or two days before serving. Allow them to cool, transfer them to an airtight container, and refrigerate.
Refrigerator
Store leftover fried apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Reheating
Warm the apples gently in a skillet over medium-low heat until the butter and sugar sauce loosens. Individual servings can also be reheated in the microwave.
Freezing
Allow the apples to cool completely before placing them in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to three months. Reheat them gently on the stovetop, keeping in mind that previously frozen apples may have a softer texture.
What to Serve With Southern Fried Apples
- For a traditional Southern breakfast, serve them with Salmon Patties and Homemade Biscuits.
- Add them to a savory dinner plate with Southern Fried Chicken or pork chops.
- Spoon them over pancakes, waffles, French toast, oatmeal, or creamy grits.
- Turn them into dessert with a scoop of No-Churn Vanilla Ice Cream.
- Serve them warm over pound cake, cheesecake, or bread pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Granny Smith apples are my first choice because they're tart and firm enough to hold their shape. Braeburn, Pink Lady, and Honeycrisp can also work, but they will make the finished dish sweeter.
I recommend peeling them for the soft, smooth texture expected in Southern fried apples. You may leave the peel on for more texture, but it can remain slightly chewy.
The apples are cooked or "fried" in butter in a skillet. They are not battered or deep-fried.
Cut the apples into even slices and remove them from the heat as soon as they're tender. They should still hold their shape and have a slight bite.
Yes. Taste the apples and adjust the sugar according to their natural sweetness and your preference. Keep some brown sugar because it helps create the buttery sauce.
Yes. Prepare them one or two days ahead, refrigerate them in an airtight container, and gently reheat them before serving.
Yes, but freezing will soften their texture. Freeze them for up to three months and reheat gently on the stovetop.
I recommend using fresh apples. Canned apples are already soft and may become mushy during stovetop cooking.
They can be either one. Serve them alongside a salty breakfast or savory dinner, or spoon them over ice cream, pancakes, or pound cake for dessert.

Video
Equipment
- 1 sharp knife
- 1 cutting board
- 1 cast iron skillet
- 1 wooden spoon or spatula
Ingredients
- 3 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, from about ½ a lemon
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Begin the recipe by preparing the 3 medium Granny Smith apples. Clean them first by washing off any debris and removing any stickers. Peel the skin off each apple, cut each apple into evenly sized slices, and remove the core and seeds. Set aside.
- Grab a large skillet, I prefer to use a cast-iron skillet and place it on the stovetop over medium-high heat. Add the 4 tablespoons butter and allow it to melt, deepen in golden color, and become foamy. About 5 minutes.

- Add the apple slices and drizzle them with 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Allow the apples time to simmer, about 1 to 2 minutes, until the butter begins to absorb and the apples become tender. Be careful not to overcook.
- Add the 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and the 2 tablespoons brown sugar into the skillet evenly over the apples.
- Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg. Gently toss to combine and adjust the heat to low. Allow the apples to cook until the sugars have dissolved and the mixture becomes hot and bubbly, about 1 to 2 minutes.

- Give the apples a final toss before turning off the heat. Serve warm and enjoy them as a side dish with something savory or salty for a nice balance. They also pair well on top of your favorite ice cream or fluffy pancakes. Enjoy!

Notes
- Be sure not to overcook the apples to the point that they become mushy. They should still have a slight bite to them. Adjust the cooking time as needed.
- Try to slice the fresh apples to the same size and thickness so that they cook evenly. They do not have to be perfect, just similar in size.
- Taste the apples while cooking and adjust the amount of sugar to your preference, you may use more or less.
- Granny Smith apples provide the best tart flavor and firm texture. Other firm apples may be used, but adjust the sugar for sweeter varieties.
- Pair these simple southern fried apples with some homemade biscuits, salmon patties, fried pork chops, a scoop of ice cream, or with pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal. There are so many options for this tasty recipe.
