Before you slice and fry, here are a few quick tips:

  • Choose firm green tomatoes - Look for tomatoes that are fully green with no signs of ripening. They should feel firm to the touch.
  • Dry them well - After slicing, pat the tomato slices dry with paper towels to help the coating stick and fry up crispy.
  • Oil temperature matters - Use a thermometer to keep the oil between 350-375°F for the best golden brown crust without sogginess.
  • Prep in batches - Dredge all tomato slices first and then fry in batches for less mess and consistent results.

Fried green tomatoes are best served fresh, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to help restore their crispiness.

What to Serve With Fried Green Tomatoes

  • A side of creamy Comeback Sauce or remoulade.
  • Alongside barbecue, grilled meats, or fried fish.
  • Stacked on a BLT for a tangy twist.

FAQs

Can I use ripe tomatoes instead of green?

Not recommended. Ripe tomatoes are too soft and will fall apart during frying.

What's the difference between cornmeal and breadcrumbs in the coating?

Cornmeal adds crunch and a classic Southern texture, while breadcrumbs help it brown and cling better. The combo gives you the best of both.

Can I make these in the air fryer?

Yes! Spray with oil and air fry at 400°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway. Results may not be as golden, but still tasty.
