Lay’s Do Us A Flavor 2014, Simply LaKita a food blog decided to give the flavor a try and share her opinion with her readers.
And the million dollar winner is…..
Last year and this year Lay’s held its Do Us A Flavor competition where contestants could submit the newest potato chip flavor. You may recall the finalists from last year were Sriracha, Cheesy Garlic Bread (the winner), and Chicken & Waffles (my son’s personal favorite). This year the finalist were even more interesting and included Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Cappuccino, Mango Salsa, and of course the winner Wasabi Ginger.
Lay’s had over 14 million flavor submission and allowed chip lovers everywhere to taste test the finalist from July 28 through October 18 and cast their votes for their favorite flavor and winner. I was able to try all of the flavors this year and was happy that this year Lay’s decided to release snack size bags to try. My opinion of the finalists is as follows:
- Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger – I love kettle cooked chips! Neither the wasabi, nor the ginger flavor was overpowering, and it reminded me of eating sushi. This was my favorite flavor out of all four choices.
- Wavy Mango Salsa – I like that this chip was wavy because it gives more durability for dipping. I figured since I love the mango fruit and salsa that I would enjoy this chip…but boy was I wrong. This chip was way too sweet and I did not enjoy it. Now it is possible that this chip would taste better if I dipped it into some…I’m just not sure what that something would be.
- Cappuccino – Definitely tasted like some sort of coffee beverage…no salt…lots of mocha chocolate flavoring…and I did not like this at all.
- Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese – This chip tasted like a loaded baked potato and would be even better if dipped into some sour cream. I am not a big fan of the bacon and mac & cheese combination…so that is probably why this was not my favorite.
Well after trying the finalist I can tell you that none of these chips would be a flavor that I would buy often and/or eat in one sitting. But then again my favorite chip is plain ole Lay’s potato chips. But if you have an interesting flavor that you think would be a good chip…you may want to give it a try next year because it could be worth a million dollars.
